The Hindi film industry has been cashing on the idea of comedy films with strong social messages for a long time. But as mindlessly easy this genre might seem, it isn't. Good Newwz treads on a thin rope.
Good Newwz is the story of how the Batras and the Batras tackle a sperm mixup during an IVF process. Meet Deepti and Varun Batra, a high society couple trying desperately to get pregnant and Honey and Monika Batra, a desi couple who've been trying for a baby since eternity. They seek help from a fertility specialist and opt for IVF. But during the IVF process, Varun's sperm inseminated Monika's eggs and Honey's sperm inseminated Deepti's eggs due to a sperm mixup by a technician. And then hell breaks lose when the Batras meet the Batras.
Critiquing this film on the scale of Badhaai Ho or Kapoor and Sons would be an erroneous choice. What the film clearly lacks in emotional sensibility and messaging it more than makes it up in the humour department. The comedy shadows the drama and it does work here.
At the heart of this film is the delightful and adorable performance of Kiara Advani as Monika Batra. After the much criticised Kabir Singh, Kiara more than redeems herself here. She not just aces the antics of Monika but also understands her emotional and mental state. For me, Kiara shines brighter than everybody else and is handsdown her best performance ever.
Diljit Dosanjh plays the stereotypical Punjabi. As much we are done with the one tone jolly sardar, Diljit makes sure you never get enough. He works with a character that doesn't offer much in terms of the width of the character but does it skillfully. He is fun to watch.
Kareena Kapoor Khan is literally playing herself and she does what she is expected to. Her character arc is convenient to serve the narrative but she makes the rocky turnings of her character smoother. Akshay Kumar works with a flawed and antagonistic character and the man doesn't disappoint. But he has the emotional sensibility of a 9 year old.
Writer, Jyoti Kapoor, tries her hand at dealing with stigma around adoption but falls flat on her face. At one point of time, you would feel like shouting in frustration at the complete lack of sex education. There is one scene where Kareena and Kiara have a real talk moment and that is handsdown the most powerful scene.
The songs are aptly placed and don't feel forced. Putting Lauv and Akasa's Dil Na Janeya during the climax would've made the experience wholesome. Also, building the narrative around Diljit and Kiara would've made for a riveting experience.
Overall, Good Newwz has feeble emotional sensibility but great humour. The build-up of the story is disproportionate and the drama is predictable. An annoying background score will make sure you ask the Audi manager to turn the volume down.
Director, Raj Mehta and producer, Karan Johar don't wish to take risks and play it safe and offer a jolly experience.
